South African Food & Wine Festival

South African Food & Wine Festival

Saturday, September 8, 2012 11:00a to 6:00p at Grayhaven Winery, Mountain Rd, VA

Price: $20 - $35 , Kids free Phone: (804) 556-3917 Age Suitability: All Ages

Grayhaven produces handcrafted wines that honor tradition and celebrate the rich terrior of Central Virginia. The winery is known for its signature wines Pinotage, Marechal Foch, Touriga and Sauvingon Blanc as well as a stellar lineup of vinifera and hybrid varietals and blends. Grayhaven's fifty acre farm is nestled among rolling hills and surrounded by vineyards, horse pastures and forests.

Founded in 1978 by the Peple family, Grayhaven got its South African groove in 1998 when Deon Abrams, a native of Cape Town, South Africa, joined the family and the family business. Deon, general manager and one of Grayhaven’s winemakers, was responsible for introducing South Africa’s Pinotage grape into Grayhaven’s vineyards in 2001. One of only a handful of Pinotage growers in the United States, Grayhaven has continued to increase its Pinotage production through field and stock grafting to keep up with the demand for this bold, earthy delight.

After years of planning, Grayhaven and the Abrams/Peple family launched the first South African Food & Wine Festival in the U.S. in 2006. The idea was to introduce visitors to the unique cuisine, wine, food, music and culture of South Africa through a two-day festival held outdoors on the winery grounds. What started as a modest local festival has grown into a successful grass-roots cultural event attended by thousands of visitors from Nova Scotia to California to Florida, and of course Virginia.

Grayhaven and the Peple/Abrams family, along with over 150 SA Festival volunteers, invite you to experience a taste of South Africa at the 7th annual South African Food & Wine Festival in 2012.

Phantom" at Riverside Dinner Theater

                              Phantom" at Riverside Dinner Theater
Based on Gaston Leroux’s novel The Phantom of the Opera, this version is hailed by critics as eminently equal to its more famous Andrew Lloyd Webber counterpart, and continues to be performed at major venues throughout the world. Erik (the Phantom), raised from infancy in the catacombs under the Paris Opera House, needs beautiful music to maintain sanity, and upon hearing the voice of a street singer named Christine, accepts her as his pupil, but forbids her to look upon his horribly disfigured face. When Gérard Camière, his protector, is dismissed as Opera House manager by new owner Carlotta, whose screeching voice drives him to near madness, the Phantom finds solace only in Christine’s music and falls in love with her. After articulating his torment through acts of desperation, he is surrounded by the police and, fearing capture and treatment as a circus freak, arranges his own demise. A gorgeous, lilting, and often haunting musical score by Maury Yeston, featuring the soaring Phantom/Christine duet Home and ingeniously crafted songs including Dressing for the Night, Melodie de Paris, Where in the World, Without Your Music, You Are My Own, and You Are Music, will both heighten and lavishly indulge your visual and emotional senses. With Broadway’s Patrick A’Hearn in the title role, this is a musical masterpiece not to be missed.

Group rates are available for parties of 12 or more. Please call the Box Office to reserve your group outing at Riverside Dinner Theater!

National Pinball Museum

National Pinball Museum

From an historical perspective, pinball has always been more than just a game. It’s a scrapbook of American tradition and folklore, a looking glass of culture, a pleasure-filled journey winding its way through the marriage of art and technology. Over the decades it has captured—in lights and action—every relevant strata and change in our society from fashions to fighting, headlines to Hollywood, and national pastimes to international wars. Pinball occupies a niche all its own.

There are all kinds of museums, most following a rather standard approach by creating displays in a walk-stop-look environment. The National Pinball Museum’s vision is to go beyond the traditional museum model to create a touch-play-learn environment that is at once educational, interactive, and exciting. In this way, we hope to awaken both the sweetest memories of those who grew up in the pinball heyday and trigger the interests of a younger generation. We'll inspire them to look beyond the buzzers and the bells and discover the art and technology that lies within.
Founded in 1998, The National Pinball Museum (NPM) preserves, maintains and promotes the heritage of pinball through exhibits and programs designed to advance the public’s knowledge and appreciation of pinball; provide youth and adults with the mechanical, electrical, technical and artistic training to fully restore and preserve pinball machines; and bring the art and the pastime of pinball the recognition it deserves.

Friendship Firehouse Festival

The Friendship Firehouse Festival is a family event celebrating the special role firefighters have played throughout history. The festival, held at the historic Friendship Firehouse in Old Town Alexandria, features antique fire apparatus, craft booths, live musical entertainment by the Lump Dog Band and displays by Alexandria merchants. Children will receive free fire helmets and balloons and will be treated to supervised visits where they can become “co-passengers” inside the City’s fire trucks.
In addition to the outdoor festival events, the Friendship Firehouse Museum will offer tours. The building was originally built as a firehouse in 1855, remodeled in 1871 and was restored to its original condition in 1992. The Engine Room on the first floor showcases historic fire-fighting equipment, including hand-drawn fire engines, leather water buckets, axes, and sections of early rubber hose. The second floor houses exhibits on the Friendship Fire Company – known as “George Washington’s Fire Company” – which was Alexandria’s first fire company and has been a source of civic pride since its founding in 1774.
The Friendship Veterans Fire Engine Association sponsors the festival each year on the first Saturday in August. The Friendship Fire Company is now a philanthropic organization that remains active in community events and is dedicated to preserving fire-fighting history and promoting fire safety.
Date and Time: August 4, 2012, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

A little History
The level of programming at the Center for the Arts has increased dramatically with our move to the Old Hopkins Candy Factory in November of 2002. This three story historic brick building was owned by the Caton Merchant family of Merchant’s, Inc. It was donated to the City of Manassas by Merchants, Inc., specifically to house the Center for the Arts and expanded cultural activities. The Candy Factory houses a theater in the round, classroom and office space and an art gallery. Restoration of the Candy Factory began in August 2001 and was completed in October 2002.
