Grape and Grains Trail

                                  Hartwood Winery
A new tourism initiative aims to promote the Fredericksburg area’s various alcoholic-beverage producers.
The Grapes and Grains Trail allows people to buy a $12 ticket that gets them a tour of the Hartwood Winery, Potomac Point Winery, Lake Anna Winery, Mattaponi Winery, Blue & Gray Brewing Co. and A. Smith Bowman Distillery.
The ticket also includes a stemless wine glass for tastings with the Grapes and Grains Trail logo on it, and a 20 percent discount at each facility’s gift shop.

Hartwood Winery opened in the spring of 1989 in the rural community of Hartwood, Virginia. Hartwood is an area long known for its heavy deer population. Hart is the old English word for deer, and according to local legend is the basis of the area's name; and in turn the winery's logo.

Hartwood Winery's award-winning wines are clear evidence of potential embodied in Virginia wines in our rapidly maturing wine industry. Hartwood Winery continues to build on its solid foundation by providing excellent wines in a warm, friendly atmosphere for all to enjoy.

National Pinball Museum

National Pinball Museum

From an historical perspective, pinball has always been more than just a game. It’s a scrapbook of American tradition and folklore, a looking glass of culture, a pleasure-filled journey winding its way through the marriage of art and technology. Over the decades it has captured—in lights and action—every relevant strata and change in our society from fashions to fighting, headlines to Hollywood, and national pastimes to international wars. Pinball occupies a niche all its own.

There are all kinds of museums, most following a rather standard approach by creating displays in a walk-stop-look environment. The National Pinball Museum’s vision is to go beyond the traditional museum model to create a touch-play-learn environment that is at once educational, interactive, and exciting. In this way, we hope to awaken both the sweetest memories of those who grew up in the pinball heyday and trigger the interests of a younger generation. We'll inspire them to look beyond the buzzers and the bells and discover the art and technology that lies within.
Founded in 1998, The National Pinball Museum (NPM) preserves, maintains and promotes the heritage of pinball through exhibits and programs designed to advance the public’s knowledge and appreciation of pinball; provide youth and adults with the mechanical, electrical, technical and artistic training to fully restore and preserve pinball machines; and bring the art and the pastime of pinball the recognition it deserves.

Friendship Firehouse Festival

The Friendship Firehouse Festival is a family event celebrating the special role firefighters have played throughout history. The festival, held at the historic Friendship Firehouse in Old Town Alexandria, features antique fire apparatus, craft booths, live musical entertainment by the Lump Dog Band and displays by Alexandria merchants. Children will receive free fire helmets and balloons and will be treated to supervised visits where they can become “co-passengers” inside the City’s fire trucks.
In addition to the outdoor festival events, the Friendship Firehouse Museum will offer tours. The building was originally built as a firehouse in 1855, remodeled in 1871 and was restored to its original condition in 1992. The Engine Room on the first floor showcases historic fire-fighting equipment, including hand-drawn fire engines, leather water buckets, axes, and sections of early rubber hose. The second floor houses exhibits on the Friendship Fire Company – known as “George Washington’s Fire Company” – which was Alexandria’s first fire company and has been a source of civic pride since its founding in 1774.
The Friendship Veterans Fire Engine Association sponsors the festival each year on the first Saturday in August. The Friendship Fire Company is now a philanthropic organization that remains active in community events and is dedicated to preserving fire-fighting history and promoting fire safety.
Date and Time: August 4, 2012, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Location: South Alfred Street between Prince and King Streets. These streets will be closed off to traffic for the event. See a map of Alexandria
