A New Exhibit from June 29 through October 28

Collecting the Civil War, a new Manassas Museum exhibit opening on June 29, will explore the sheer range of Civil War artifacts in private and museum collection, and will offer visitors the chance to see unusual items from the era.

Mary Helen Dellinger, the museum's curator, acknowledges that many Civil War artifacts like bullets and belt buckles may be familiar to many. What makes this exhibit unusual, Dellinger says, is its emphasis on a variety of unusual items from a number of collections. "This exhibit will show just a small slice of what's collected from the war, whether they are military supplies, or family heirlooms or modern-day art.

Dellinger credits the generosity of private collectors David Goetz and Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Leigh, Jr., The Museum of the Confederacy in Richmond and The Fredericksburg Area Museum and Cultural Center with providing depth to the exhibit's artifacts. A number of items from the museum's own collection, some that have never been display, are also included in the exhibit.

The Museum of the Confederacy has loaned a pair of spurs once worn by Confederate Civil War legend General Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson. Another spur, belonging to an unknown solider and found in recent years by Olde Towne Landscaping Company president Mark Olsen, shows that Civil War artifacts are still being found in the areaCollecting the Civil War runs through October 28 and is included with admission

American Music! - Fredericksburg Big Band

Join us for our second American Music! Concert Series. This concert in the series features the Fredericksburg Big Band.

Whether it is music from the 40’s and 50’s made famous by such artists as Glen Miller, Benny Goodman and Count Basie, or more recent songs like Barry Manilow’s Copacabana, the Fredericksburg Big Band will have everyone on their feet dancing!
The series will showcase a variety of American music genres including jazz, country, Americana, and classical music. Concerts will take place on various Saturdays from May through September and are held from 7-9pm in historic Market Square. All concerts are FREE and open to the public. Bricks and Boards in the 'Burg

The Fredericksburg Area Museum and Cultural Center, along with Hallowed Ground Tours, present walking tours of historic downtown Fredericksburg. Bricks and Boards in the ’Burg will highlight history and architecture from four different centuries, the historic influence of the Rappahannock River, the Spire and Steeples of Princess Anne Street, Fredericksburg’s Town Hall, Market House and the history of Market Square. Tours begin and end in Market Square, located behind Town Hall, and run every Saturday, April 7 – October 13, beginning at 10:00 a.m.

5th Annual Northern Virginia Summer Brewfest

Kick off the summer with a Celebration of American Beer! Sample some of the finest libations from over 40 of America's best breweries, learn how the beer is made, and how to brew your own. Enjoy your favorite foods made by great local restaurants: chicken wings, chili, barbecue, and much more. Local and regional musical groups will be performing, wonderful crafters and artisans will show their wares, and a Family Fun area is available for kids.

Our Summer BrewFest is a craft beer festival, providing a great opportunity to try beers from different microbreweries from around the United States. Adult admission is for those 21 years of age and older. Prior to admission, you must present a valid identification documenting that you are at least 21 years of age.

Included in the price of adult admission you will receive a sampling glass (4.75 oz) and 4 beer sampling tickets. You can use those tickets to purchase beers at the price of 1-2 tickets per beer, depending on how expensive your tastes are. Additional tickets can be purchased for $1 a piece. We encourage you to sample different beers and enjoy all of the tasty libations, but be careful because some of these are much stronger then what you’re used to drinking! And yes, we have wine too! The Lone Winery will be a local winery offering several varieties for purchase by the glass!


Participants are expected to drink responsibly.

AIDS Memorial Quilt

In June of 1987, a small group of strangers gathered in a San Francisco storefront to document the lives they feared history would neglect. Their goal was to create a memorial for those who had died of AIDS, and to thereby help people understand the devastating impact of the disease. This meeting of devoted friends and lovers served as the foundation of the NAMES Project AIDS Memorial Quilt.
Today the Quilt is a powerful visual reminder of the AIDS pandemic. More than 47,000 individual 3-by-6-foot memorial panels — most commemorating the life of someone who has died of AIDS — have been sewn together by friends, lovers and family members. This is the story of how the Quilt began…

Established in 1987, The NAMES Project Foundation is the international NGO (non-governmental organization) that is the custodian of The AIDS Memorial Quilt, an official American treasure.
The mission of The NAMES Project Foundation is to preserve, care for and use The AIDS Memorial Quilt to foster healing, heighten awareness, and inspire action in the age of AIDS. Specifically, The NAMES Project works to display The Quilt in nearly 1,000 venues each year, to conserve and care for the aging 54-ton tapestry and it’s half a million piece archive, and to encourage and support the creation of new Quilt panels for this ever-evolving handmade memorial.
Weighing 54 tons and composed of more than 47,000 panels dedicated to more than 90,000 individuals, The AIDS Memorial Quilt is the premier symbol of the AIDS pandemic, our greatest HIV prevention education tool and the largest ongoing piece of community folk art in the world.
Throughout its 20 years history, The Quilt has been used to fight prejudice, raise awareness and funding, as a means to link hands with the global community in the fight against AIDS. Whether The Quilt is displayed as a single section in an elementary school or 1,000 of blocks on the national mall in Washington, it provides balm for the painful wounds of grief, pours oil into the waters made turbulent by controversy, opens eyes that refuse to see and enlists every person who experiences it to play a role in stopping the pandemic.

Redskins Training Camp 2012



Redskins Training Camp is held each July/August at Redskins Park in Ashburn, Virginia. During the first week of practice, fans are invited to see the Washington Redskins in action on the practice field. Visitors are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets. Practices last between 90 minutes and two hours. After each practice, fans may have the opportunity to get autographs and take photos of their favorite players. Admission and parking is free.

The Washington Redskins will identify a new training camp site to hold summer practice in Richmond, Virginia starting in 2013.

FedEx Field is the home of the Washington Redskins football team and is the largest stadium in the National Football League, with 91,704 seats. Located in Landover, Maryland, the stadium was built to replace Washington’s RFK Stadium in 1997 at a cost of $250 million. FedEx Field has five levels including standard seating and three tiers of luxury suites. Suites are equipped with restrooms, a refrigerator, televisions, a lounge area, two rows of seats and bar stools. Improvements for the 2010-2011 season include a new text message traffic alert system, new HD video boards, complete renovation and replacement of the stadium’s video control room, and the installation of the locker of the late Sean Taylor for viewing on the club level.
